TAC recently re-launched the How Safe is Your Car? website to help drivers make safer choices and have just been awarded a Winner in Australia’s International Good Design Awards

In 2019, 232 people lost their lives on Victorian roads. Victoria's Transport and Accident Commission (TAC) and the Victorian Government believe that zero can be the only acceptable number of deaths on our roads. We can all make a difference. By driving at safer speeds, making safe decisions, building safer roads and by choosing safer cars we can bring that number down.

So, how do we get everyday people to choose safer cars? By bringing together the abundance of existing car data available, and presenting it in a way that's easily understood and useful.

How Safe Is Your Car (HSIYC) is a re-vamped digital service provided by TAC to enable people to make the safest choice for them and their family by searching, browsing and comparing the safety ratings of vehicles; and educating consumers about recommended safety features.

TAC wanted an easy to maintain website that collated official data from various sources such as ANCAP, Redbook and Vicroads. With this multitude of data, we had to find a digestible way of presenting the information to users.

Importantly, you don't have to be a car expert to find a suitable safe car! Consumers can now narrow down the results based on budget, lifestyle and other important factors.

The success of the site was dependent on making smart choices about what data to present and how to engage people with it. This Good Design Award further solidifies that we've been able to make this tangible experience for people a great one.

For the site administrators, it was important to develop a site that was easy to manage, allowing them to keep data up-to-date and accurate.

How Safe Is Your Car? received a prestigious Good Design Award Winner Accolade in the Digital Design Web Design and Development category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.

The Awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian market, excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design, design strategy, social impact design and young designers. More than 55 Good Design Awards Jurors evaluated each entry according to a strict set of design criteria which covers ‘good design’, ‘design innovation’ and ‘design impact’.

HSIYC is a well executed site that aggregates safety data and provides it to users in a very simple and effective way. The How Safe Is Your Car digital service enables people to make the safest choice for them and their family by searching, browsing and comparing the safety ratings of vehicles.

The design of the site has been beautifully executed and delivers on its core function - to educate consumers about recommended safety features of their car.

Overall, a great design project that is worthy of recognition in the Good Design Awards. Well done.
